Squadron Sweeps Spurs (March 2, 2023)

The Birmingham Squadron swept the Austin Spurs by taking the second game of their two-game series, 110-to-103.  Dereon Seabron led the Squadron with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. 

Austin took command of the contest in the first period, out-scoring Birmingham 26-to-17.  Julian Champagnie led the Spur’s charge with 10 points.  The team shot 60% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.  

Nets Easily Handle Spurs (February 26, 2023)

The Long Island Nets cruised past the Austin Spurs, winning 117-to-96, for their 13th consecutive win.  Long Island improved their record to 19-and-3, while Austin fell to 6-and-16. 

Spurs were in contention for the first two minutes, ending on Chaundee Brown Jr. jump shot to take a 5-to-3 lead.  They were never a real factor after that.  

Third Quarter Charge Pushes Birmingham past Austin (February 11, 2023)

A fast start to the second half gave the Birmingham Squadron (5-16) a 16-point cushion that carried them past the Austin Spurs (6-13), 120-to-113. 

Birmingham took control of the boards, out-rebounding Austin 40-to-30.  The Squadron also bettered the Spurs in points from the paint, 64-to-50.  Austin was without their “bigs”, Charles Bassey and Dominick Barlow, who were the San Antonio Spurs.  

Spurs Extinguish Ignite (February 10, 2023)

The G League Ignite, the hottest of the upcoming NBA Stars, proved it’s more important to play like a team than play like a rising star.  The Spurs (6-12) decisively defeated the Ignite (7-10), 116-to-83. 

The Spurs did this without some of their top talent.  San Antonio assignee Blake Wesley, and two-way players Dominick Barlow and Charles Bassey were not with the team.  

Blue Top Spurs at Buzzer (February 2, 2023)

It was rude Ground Hog Day as former Austin player Robert Woodard III dropped a field goal as time expired to lead the Oklahoma City Blue (6-9) over the Austin Spurs (4-10), 115-to-114. 

This game appeared to be an improvement for the Spurs.  They continued to improve in team playing, producing 28 assists, and generating 16 fast-break points.  However, the absence of muscle under the ring (Charles Bassey was sidelined to injury) gave OKC a 62-to-50 points advantage on points in the paint.  

Spurs Cruise to Victory Over Legends (January 26, 2023)

The Texas Legends and the Austin Spurs was competitive for the first six minutes, with the changing hands five times.  But it was one-way contest after that with the Spurs (4-8) defeating  the Legends (4-7) by a final score of 131-to-108. 

Austin converted on an unusually high 64% of shots from the floor, completed an extraordinarily high (for the team) 37 passes resulting in baskets, and out-rebounded Texas 49-to-35. 

Spurs Run Out Gas, Fall to Clippers (January 21, 2023)

The momentum from Friday’s surprise win was not enough to carry the Austin Spurs (3-7), as they fell to the Ontario Clipper (7-5) by a score of 115-to-82. 

The Spurs held tough in the opening frame, matching the Clippers basket for basket.  But Ontario turned the tables on Austin to take a 56-to-46 led at the half.  The Clipper grew their lead to as many as 33 points at the final buzzer.

The Austin Spurs (3-6) pulled ahead to defeat the Ontario Clippers (6-5) by a score of 108-to-100, but only after the game changed leads 26 times, and was tied 11 times. 

The margin of victory for the Spurs was turnovers, second chance points, and fast breaks.  Austin forced 14 turnovers, resulting in 21 points, converted 11 of 23 offense rebounds for 24 points, and leveraged fast breaks for 20 points.  This offset a particularly weak performance from beyond the arc, making on 5 of 24 attempts for 15 points.  

Austin Falls to Stockton on MLK Day (January 16, 2023)

The Stockton Kings (8-1) shutdown the Austin Spurs (2-6), winning by a score of 112-to-98 on a day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.  The Kings led from tip-off to final buzzer, leading by as many as 20 points. 

The margin of victory was second chance points.  Stockton dominated, converting 11 offensive rebounds into 22 points.  Austin was only 4-for-8 for 8 points.  Stockton won the battle of the boards, 40-to-34, and lead in blocked shots, 9-to-3.  

Kings Hit Second Half Thrusters to Blast Past Spurs (January 1, 2023)

The Stockton Kings took a one-point advance against the Austin Spurs at halftime, and blew it apart in the second half, out-scoring the Spurs 57-to-44, and winning 108-to 94. 

Stockton’s Jordan Ford had a seemingly unquenchable hunger for the hoop, putting up 14  of his team-high 19 points in the second half.  Ford was complimented by teammate Keon Ellis who found 11 of his 16 points in the back-half of the game.  

Spurs Win in Dramatic Comeback (December 29, 2022)

In the most exciting game this season, the Austin Spurs overcame a 22-point deficit to defeat the Oklahoma City Blue by a score of 108-to-105.  The game was Austin’s first of the Conference portion of the season, with the league Showcase concluding last week in Las Vegas. 

Both teams, and the officials, looked rusty from the holiday break in the first quarter.  Austin committed 7 turnovers, and OKC 4, while the officials appeared to forget if the experimental free throw rule was suspended in the final two minutes of a quarter.  It’s not.  

Hustle Out-Last Spurs in OT (December 2, 2022)

The Memphis Hustle (5-5) held on to defeat the Austin Spurs(4-7), 117-to-116.  The Hustle overcame a 15-point Austin lead to force the overtime. 

Both teams played an evenly matched, and surprisingly effective, first period.  Memphis shot 61% from the floor and 57% beyond the arc, very similar to Austin’s 57% and 63%.  The Hustle edge the Spurs 33-to-31 at the end of the first.  

Fast Start, No Finish, Spurs Fall to Vipers (December 1, 2022)

The Rio Grande Vipers (7-3) spotted the Austin Spurs (4-6) 22 points in the first period, then got serious.  The Viper bit the Spurs, 113-to-98, in a lopsided contest. 

The Vipers anemic first period play allowed the Spurs to jump to a 34-to-18 lead in the opening frame.   RGV shot a paltry 29% from the floor and 15% from distance. The Spurs’ respectable performance (48% and 25%, respectfully) allowed them to tower over the Vipers. 

Spurs Overcome Slow Start, Win in OT (November 15, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (3-2) turned-around a weak start to defeat the Memphis Hustle (2-2) in an exhilarating come-from-behind victory.  A clutch free-throw by Jordan Goldwire gave Austin a 102-to-99 victory in overtime. 

The Hustle jumped to a 21-point lead in the opening period, led by Kenneth Lofton Jr. with 12 points.  The Spurs neutralized the momentum late in the period, and narrowing the deficient to  32-to-17 to close the frame.  

Austin Fights Back, Tops Texas (November 5, 2022)

Game #2 of the Austin Spurs series against the Texas Legends looked to be an accelerated version of Game #1: Austin started white-hot and faded.  Instead, the Spurs (1-1) clawed back to reclaim the lead with three minutes remaining to defeat the Legends (1-1). 

The Spurs took command in the first quarter, never trailing and leading by as many as 11 points, before setting on a 36-to-29 lead.  The Legends worked their way back in the second frame, bettering the Spurs 36-to-24,  earning a 5-point lead at the half.  

Spurs Drop Home Opener (November 4, 2022)

The Austin Spurs owned the first half in their season opening game against the Texas Legends.  But like many early-season teams, they forgot there are two halves to a game.  Austin fell to Texas, 120-to-113. 

Austin’s strong first half performance may have been weighted more by how marginally the Legends played.  Austin out-shot Texas from the floor, 52%-to-40%, and controlled the boards, 26-to-11.  The result was good enough for 60-to-54 lead at the half.  

April Fool’s: Warriors over Spurs (April 1, 2022)

Was it all an April Fool’s joke? 

The Austin Spurs were playing before a sold-out house in their final home game of the season.  The Spurs had trailed since the end of the first period, but were clawing their way back.  Fans were on their feet, screaming their support at the top of their lungs.  Then the Spurs did it… they tied the game with 10.6 second left in regulation. 

Then the Spurs failed to show up for the overtime period.  The Santa Cruz Warriors (15-17) easily rolled over the Spurs (13-18) 10-to-4 in the OT, and win 118-to-112.  

Depleted Squadron Threatens Spurs (March 17, 2022)

The Austin Spurs dodged a bullet against a depleted Birmingham Squadron team, eking out a 100-to-98 win.  Birmingham fielded only a seven-person lineup due to the flu and NBA assignment. 

The Squadron opted to play only to avoid paying a $60K hefty forfeiture fee.  Missing from the team were Jose Alvarado and Gary Clark on assignment with the New Orleans Pelicans, and Jared Harper, Justin Wright-Foreman and Joe Young with the flu.  

Spurs Come Up Empty in OT (March 13, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (12-11) seesawed to a 91-91 draw in regulation, then failed to score a point in OT, giving the Iowa Wolves (11-12) a 97-91 victory.  The Wolves, 3-7 in their last 10 games, broke a 3-game losing streak. 

Neither team had their go-to players.  Iowa’s Nathan Knight (33 points, 12 rebounds) and Austin’s Devontae Cacok (17 points, 11.5 rebounds) had been called up by their parent clubs.  

Massive Comeback: Spurs Over Stars (March 5, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (10-9) out-scored the Salt Lake City Stars (6-16) 31-17 in a fourth quarter blowout to win 110-100.  The Spurs need a big comeback after squandering early control of the game that saw Salt Lake put only seven players on the floor. 

Newly signed two-way player Robert Woodard II and DJ Stewart saw their first action of the season, replacing previous two-way players Devontae Cacok and Joe Weiskamp who signed  with the San Antonio Spurs.  Woodard made a fabulous impression, coming off the bench for 21 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals in 26 minutes. 

Turnovers Sink Salt Lake (March 4, 2022)

The Salt Lake City Stars (6-15) were their own undoing as turnovers was the difference as they fell to the Austin Spurs (9-9) 136-126.  The Stars committed 13 turnovers resulting in 23 points for the Spurs. 

The Stars looked solid in the opening frame, leading the Spurs by as many as 7 points, closing the period with a 32-27 lead.  

Explosive Third Period Thrusts Legends over Spurs (March 1, 2022) 

The Texas Legends (9-10) busted-open a tight contest in the third period, out-scoring the Austin Spurs (8-9) 39-to-26, in route to a 99-to-94 victory. 

The Legends took a 43-to-42 lead into the locker room after a very competitive first half, seeing the lead change 8 times with the Spurs leading by as many as 7 points.   Neither team look especially sharp,  with Austin making only 35% of field goals (17-for-49) and 19% of three-point attempts (3-for-16), and Texas 41% (18-for-44) and 26% (5-for-19), respectively. 

Clippers Roll Over Spurs (February 14, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (5-8) played without heart on Valentine’s day, falling to the Aqua Caliente Clippers (13-4), 116-to-78, in one of the most one-sided basketball games every played in the HEB Center. 

Both teams played loose with the ball, each allowing 16 turnovers and 8 steals, with more contested possession jump-balls (4) than any other G-League game that I’ve seen. But the Spurs appeared to discount fundaments and forget that basketball is a team sport. 

Vipers Roll Over Spurs (February 10, 2022)

The second place Rio Grande Valley Vipers defeated the eighth place Austin Spurs, 139-to-127, in a game where the Spurs displayed competitiveness but lacked poise.  Trevelin Queen led the Vipers with a massive 43 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spurs were sharp offensive, besting the Viper in field goals (55 to  53%), three pointers (46 to 38%) and free throws (79 to 76%).  But Austin’s play was loose, turning the ball over 21 times and committing 31 personal fouls.  The Spurs also lost the battle of the boards and assists.  

Dotson, Cacok Lead Spurs over Blue (February 4, 2022)

Damyean Dotson clinched a 109-104 win for the Austin Spurs (4-4) over the Oklahoma City Blue (8-6) with ten consecutive free throws in the last 37 seconds of the game.  The upset victory placed the  Spurs two wins away from the Western Conference playoff cutoff. 

Both teams played a tight first half, changing leads 5 times and tying 8 times, with the Blue nursing a 53-50 lead at halftime. 

Late Turnovers Doom Spurs (January 30, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (3-4) fell to the Santa Cruz Warriors (5-6), 123-110, as Devontae Cacok’s string of double-doubles ended at 15 games. 

Turnovers plagued the Spurs throughout the entire game, committing 18 in the first three periods. But the Austin played nip and tuck basketball against Santa Cruz, with both teams owning up to a  7-point lead, exchanging leads 11 times, and tying the game 9.  

Spurs Top Skyforce, Cacok Extends Steak (January 27, 2022)

The Austin Spurs (3-3) and the Sioux Falls  Skyforce 92-9) played a very competitive basketball  game, exchanging leads 17 and tying 9 times, until the Spurs exploded in the final frame to win 119 – 97. 

Austin was led by Devontae Cacok who extended his double-double streak to 15 games with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  San Antonio assignee Zach Collins also had a big night, putting up 15 points and pulling down 18 rebounds.    

Cacok Lead Spurs over Hustle, Sets Franchise Record, January 21, 2021

The Austin Spurs (2-2) played their most complete game of the season as they defeated the Memphis Hustle (2-5), 114-107.  Highlighting the victory was Devontae Cacok’s franchise record setting  twelfth consecutive double-double. 

The Spurs followed a well-worn pattern of falling behind early in the game, giving Memphis a 6-point advantage in the first four minutes of play.  A well-placed timeout quelled the Hustle’s momentum, 

Spurs Top Vipers in Dust Bowl, January 17, 2022

The Austin Spurs (1-1) topped the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-3), 127-124, in a tightly fought contest best described as a dust bowl.  There was literally dust throughout the arena floor of the HEB Center as well as dust on both team’s play due to COVID restricted play. 

Entering Monday’s game Spurs had played one game since December 22, and the Vipers three games, due to COVID.  And it showed.  Each team amassed 24 turnovers producing 48 combined points, acconting for nearly 20% of the total score. 

Greensboro Swarms Austin, December 3, 2021

The Greensboro Swarm (2-8) embarrassed the Austin Spurs (3-5), defeating them 105-to-96, in one of the sloppiest games of basketball in memory.  The Spurs committed 20 turnovers, resulting in 25 points for the Swarm. 

The Swarm led by as many as 29 points before downshifting their game into pity-mode.  

Spurs Win in Come-Back, December 2, 2021

The Austin Spurs were their own worst enemies in the first half of their game against the Greensboro Swarm.  But Austin overcame a ten-point deficit to tie the game at the buzzer and went on to defeated the Swarm 108-105 in double overtime.  

Spurs Star Power Leads to Bigger Disappointment, November 27, 2021

It was “second verse, same as the first” for the Austin Spurs (2-4) as they took on the Memphis Hustle (4-2) in the second game of their series. Austin, who suffered a bad loss in game one,  plumbed new lows with an embarrassing loss in game two, 108-78. 

A much closer contest was expected with the return of San Antonio Spurs assignee Josh Primo and two-way player Joe Wieskamp.  Unfortunately, the mojo from San Antonio Spurs players Dejounte Murray and Derrick White in the stands did not rub off.  

Late Surge Falls Short for Austin Spurs, November 26, 2021

The Austin Spurs (2-3) dug a 21-point deep hole in the first period and were never able to recover, despite a fourth period rally.  The Spurs fell to the Memphis Hustle (3-2) 103-94. 

Both teams enter the contest expecting a battle of equals.  Each had a 2-2 record, having lost their last games.  However, missing from the Spur’s line-up were leading scorer Joe Wieskamp (17.8 points per game) and leading assists Josh Primo (3.8 assists per game).  

Spurs Survive Shaky Close, November 18, 2021

The Austin Spurs (3-1) outlasted the Mexico City Capitanes (2-4), 99-91, in one of the loosest  fourth periods in recent memory.  Each team committed half of the game’s turnovers in the period.  Austin swept the two-game series.  

Stunning Victory as Spurs Return to Austin, November 14, 2021

Spurs’ Bench Delivers over Clippers, February 4, 2020

Memphis Hustle Rolls Over Austin Spurs, November 13, 2019
