Excesses Lead to Demise of Austin Gilgronis? (August 3, 2022)

When is $371M not enough own a Major League Rugby (MLR) club? When you mis-manage your company, over-spend on lavish real estate, and get disqualified  for over-paying your players. 

Adam Gilchrist is locally known as the owner of MLR’s Austin Gilgronis.  Gilchrist acquired the Austin Elite and rebranded it in 2020, bringing a new cachet to the local sports scene.  Gilchrist also owns MLR’s LA Giltinis.  

Austin Shows Mercy Over Seattle (May 1, 2022)

The Austin Gilgronis (10-2) continued their tear through Major League Rugby’s  Western Conference with a 17-6 victory over the Seattle Seawolves (6-6).  Austin extends their winning streak to five matches and increases their conference race lead to 9-points. 

As one-sided as the score was, it could have been worse.  Austin had three trys called back for penalties, and heavy second half substitution made for lack-luster play. 

Austin Retains Texas Cup, Flattens Houston (April 3, 2022)

Mack Mason’s try in the sixth minute of play were all the points the Austin Gilgronis (6-2) needed to defeat the Houston SaberCats (4-4) and retain the Texas Cup.  The AG continued to rack up five additional tries to win by a final score of 43-to-5. 

“The first half was more interesting than the second.  We had to take the fight to Houston because we knew they were going to be gritty; we knew they were going to be niggly, and we didn’t take it back,” said Austin Gilgronis head coach Sam Harris.  “That was our plan, we executed and that was very pleasing.”

Saturday was a big night for the Austin Gilgronis as they celebrated their final home match of the 2021 Major League Rugby season.  The Gilgronis (7-5) responded with a massive victory over the Toronto Arrows (4-8) by a score of 47-21. The AG made the event more special with a combined fan appreciation and Pride night, which coincided with the Republic of Texas (ROT) biker rally also hosted at the Circuit of the Americas.

Austin Gilgronis (5-4) fell badly to the LA Giltinis (8-1) by a score of 17-to-3 in a battle of Western Conference rivals.  Both teams are owned by Adam Gilchrist, a former Australian rugby player and entrepreneur who also owns a worldwide gym franchise. The Gilgronis entered the match as the clear underdogs, facing a statically superior team, and coming off only four days rest since their last match.

The Austin Gilgronis (5-3) defeated the Rugby United NY (5-3) in one of the most unique matches played in Bold Stadium. The Gilgronis ultimately defeated Rugby United by a score of 16-to-9 in a grind-it-out battle. Play tactically focused on field position with an unusually number of kicks downfield to improve station.  

Gilgronis Extends Streak with Decisive Win, April 25, 2021

The Austin Gilgronis (6-4) extended it win-streak to four matches with a decisive 42-15 win over the Seattle Seawolves (1-4).  The AG earned a bonus point towards the league standing by scoring four or more tries in a match.  Austin has the second-best record in the Western Conference and in the League, second only to sister club, the LA Giltinis.

In what was probably the most exciting game in Major League Rugby’s four-year history in Austin, the Austin Gilgronis (AG) defeated the Rugby ATL in a back-and-forth contest. The ATL appeared the more determined team in their pre-game warmups, the pre-kickoff rituals, and in the opening minutes of play.

The Austin Gilgronis and Utah Warriors are known for close matches.  It was only appropriate that the 2021 season-opening match highlight these two teams.  Last season the Warriors came-from-behind to eke out a 19-19 drawn.  This year it was the Gilgronis making a come-from-behind bid that ultimately fell short.

Since the end of last season the Austin Elite underwent two name changes and a change of ownership.  Some things have changed, but much appears to have stayed the same.  The 2019 Austin Elite went 0-16 on the season.  The 2020 Austin Gilgronis extended that winless record in their season-opening match against the Toronto Arrows.  <more>

Elite Start Strong but Fade, March 16, 2019

The Austin Elite Rugby (0-7) club took on the Seattle Seawolves (5-2) at the Dell Diamond on Saturday evening. The Seawolves, currently in second place in Major League Rugby (MLR), won the championship last year.  The Elite, who made the playoffs last season, are currently in the MLR cellar.  <more>

USA Eagles out-last Team Brazil February 23, 2019

The Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) came to the Dell Diamond matching the USA Eagles versus Brazil. The USA rolled over Brazil in the first half, leading by a many as 19 points.  A come-from-behind surge by Team Brazil fell short and the USA Eagles held on to win 33-28.   This was the first meeting of the two teams.  <more>

Elite Fall to Unrelenting Legion,February 22, 2019

The Austin Elite (0-5) mounted a valiant defense against the San Diego Legion (4-1) but ultimately collapsed under the continued pounding.  The Legion scored four tries on six attempts in the first half in route to a 45-17 win.  The Legion’s first half tries came from JP du Plessi, Dean Muir, Devin Short and Nate Augspurger. <more>

The Austin Elite Rugby (0-2) club lost to the out-sized Utah Warriors (1-0) on Friday at the Dell Diamond, 17-9.  Austin never seemed to find their stride in the game, relying solely upon penalty kicks in the first half for points.  Ironically, last week the Houston SaberCats, who scored only on penalty kicks, beat the Elite. <more>

Austin Elite Opens Inaugural Major League Rugby Season March 25, 2018

The Austin Elite opened its Major League Rugby (MLR) play in a preseason match against the San Diego Legion.  The MLR is an American professional rugby union competition that began its first season in 2018.  The Austin Elite is one of seven teams in the league.  <more>
