#5 Texas Dodges Upset (February 21, 2024)

The fifth ranked University of Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team (25-3, 12-3) narrowly defeated the Texas Tech Lady Raiders (16-12, 5-10), 77-to-72.  The game was much closer than the final score indicates.

“They pretty much stuck it to us for 40 minutes,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.  “We’re real fortunate that we don’t learn a really tough lesson tonight.”

The Longhorns had more than their fair share of problems defensively, appearing to play without energy.  The play, or lack thereof, created numerous breakdowns, allowing an inordinate number of back-door and straight-line drives.  Tech easily caught Texas’ defensive switches, enabling them to convert on 12 of 25 (48%) three-point attempts.

Texas Finds Its Defense, Squashes Cincinnati (January 27, 2024)

A different University of Texas Longhorns team stepped on to the floor at the Moody Center to take on the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in women’s basketball.  Gone was the team that lacked juice, energy, and fight.  In its place was a scrappy, defensive minded unit that shut down the Bearcats, winning 67-to-50.

The win comes on the heels of an embarrassing loss to Oklahoma where Texas gave up 91 points.

“As bad as Wednesday night was defensively, I though they responded really well today and that show some character,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.  “I thought our kids were tough, y’all, which is something we addressed the last couple days.”
