Kansas Fends Off Late Inning Threats, Tops Texas State (February 23, 2024)

The University of Kansas Jayhawks (3-2) defeated the Texas State University Bobcats (3-2) in their opening game of the Karbach Round Rock Classic by a final score of 7-to-4. 

The Jayhawk win was fueled with a four-run first inning effort that produced a lead that last the game.  The Bobcats threatened in the sixth and eighth innings by loading the bases but could not produce but one run. 

Kansas starting pitcher Reese Dutton earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings on the mound.  He struck out five and walked one batter.  Texas State starter Austin Eaton endured the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.  Eaton struck out two and walked one batter.  

Texas State Goes Bowling with South Alabama Win (November 25, 2023)

The Texas State University Bobcats punched their ticket to a post-season bowl game with a decisive 52-to-44 win over the University of South Alabama (USA) Jaguars.  The Bobcats improve their record to 7-5 on the season and are guaranteed a spot in one of the 42 bowl games. 

The Bobcat earned the win with a total team effort, scoring touchdowns on offense, defense, and special teams.  The team last recorded the feat in 2012. 

Texas State’s first touchdown came on a defensive fumble recovery by Kaleb Culp, taking the ball into the end zone from 31 yards out.  Offensive touchdowns in the air from TJ Finley to Ashtyn Hawkins, and on the ground by Jahmyl Jeter gave the Bobcats a 21-to-0 lead.  Mason Shipley’s field goal from 28 yards out capped a 24-point first quarter.  

Bobcats Rally in Final Minute, Defeat Louisiana Monroe (October 14, 2023)

It was ugly, until it wasn’t. 

The Texas State Bobcats could not complete a drive against the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) Warhawks, trailing 9-to-20 with less than five minutes of the game.  The Bobcats then bookend two, 75-yard drives to defeat the Warhawks, 21-to-20, with 41 seconds remaining on the game clock. 

A crowd of 27,537 fans, the fifth largest in school history, watched the exciting come-back.  

Comeback for the Record Book: Texas State over Nevada (September 23, 2023)

Texas State Bobcats overcame a 17-to-0 deficit at halftime to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack 35-to-24.   The comeback was the biggest in Texas State’s FBS history, and the team is off to its best start since in ten years. 

Texas State was led by Ismail Mahdi, running for a career high 216 yards on 21 carriers, including two touchdowns.  Quarterback TJ Finley completed 25 of 31 passing attempts for 295 yards.  His favorite targets were Kole Wilson (4 receptions, 93 yards, 1 TD) and Joey Hobert (9 receptions, 90 yards, 1 TD).  Quarterback Malik Hornsby, sometime running back, had one carry for 13 yards and a touchdown.  

Small Texas State Contingent Produces at Texas Relays (March 31, 2023)

The Texas State University Bobcat Track and Field team sent only 12 athletes to the 95th Clyde LIttlefield Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadiums in Austin, Texas.  But those dozen athletes left their mark.

Texas State Falls to Louisiana in Finale (November 26, 2022)

A disappointing season ended in a disappointing Senior Day send-off as the Texas State Bobcats (4-8, 2-6) fell to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (6-6, 4-4) by a score of 41-to-13.  The only unanswered question to the season was would Texas State head coach Jake Spavital return for the final year of his five-year contract. 

Spavital, clearly un-settled in the post-game press conference, tried to put a positive spin on the lopsided loss. 

“I thought that it was kind of even in time of possession, third down conversions and any kind of yardage and everything else,” he said.  “But what it came down to was we had some turnovers at some unique times.”  

Stunning Upset! Texas State over App State (October 8, 2022)

The Texas State Bobcats, a 19 ½ point underdog, soundly defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 36-to-24, in a stunning upset.  The Bobcats (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt) scored on six of its ten drives and held App State (3-3, 1-2 Sun Belt) to a field goal in the first half. 

The Bobcats put-up one rushing TD, two passing TDs, three field goals and an interception returned for a touchdown.  Texas State played a clean game with only five penalties for 50 yards to App State’s 12 offenses for 105 yards.  They also won the turnover war, giving up the ball once on an interception to and interception and a fumble by the Mountaineers.  Texas State held App State to 6-of-15 third down attempts and 2-of-6 fourth downs.  

Texas State Rolls Over Houston Christian (September 24, 2002)

Something was different about this Texas State football game. 

The University President worked the crowd.  The Athletic Directory appeared happily engaged.  The fans were excited.  And the Texas State Bobcats (2-2) decisively defeated the Houston Christian University Huskies (1-2) by a score of 34-to-0.  

#1 Texas Shuts Out Texas State (January 23, 2022)

The top ranked University of Texas Longhorns (1-0) women’s tennis team dropped just 20 games in 8 matches to sweep the Texas State University Bobcats (0-2).  The closest match was an unfinished doubles match that went 4-3.  Texas claimed a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point.  Texas swept the single matches in straight sets.

Texas State Defense Takes Down ULM, November 6, 2021

Texas State University head coach Jake Spavital could not have put it better, “Every game in the Sunbelt Conference takes two years off my life.” The Bobcats kept the EMTs with their defibrillators busy as Texas State (3-6, 2-3) defeated the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) Warhawks (4-5, 2-4), 27-19.   But the score comes nowhere near telling the complete story.  

Texas State Rolls the Tide, September 10, 2021

The Texas State University Bobcats (2-6) defeated the University of Alabama Crimson Tide (5-3) in 4 sets in the opening match of the Bobcat Invitational.  The Bobcats easily handled the Crimson Tide in the opening set, winning 25-16.   Alabama fought back in the second, toping Texas State in a tightly found contest, 25-23.  The Bobcats took the remaining sets 25-22 and 25-22.

Bobcats Fall to #5 Longhorns, May 4, 2021

The Texas State Bobcat (19-27) lost the game but won some respect, losing to the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns (36-11) by a score of 4-1.  The Longhorn took both meetings this season.  The Longhorns drew first blood in the second inning.  Lead-off singles by JD Petrinksky and Murphy Stehly, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Eric Kennedy, put two runners in scoring position.

Saturday brough the final day of the 2021 Bobcat Track & Field Invitational hosted by the Texas State University.  Greater than two dozen schools from across the nation traveled to San Marcos to participate in the three-day event.

Texas State Falls Badly to Texas, March 5, 2021

Spring soccer in Texas found the University of Texas Longhorns host their little sister from San Marcos, the Texas State University Bobcats.  The Bobcats, the perennial underdog, was true to its reputation and fell to the Longhorns, 4-0. Four Texas players found the back of the net in what became a one-side victory.  

Coastal Carolina Perfect Against Texas State, November 28,2020

Coastal Carolina totally out-played Texas State in nearly every aspect of the game: time of possession (37.5 minutes to 22.5), first downs (32 to 13) and total offense (572 yards to 318) in route to a 49 – 14 blowout victory.  Coastal even cleared their benches, putting 65 players on the field to Texas State’s 51.

Texas State Snaps Skid in Thriller. November 21, 2020

The Texas State Bobcats (2-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak with an exciting come-from-behind victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (3-6).  The Bobcats scored the game winning touchdown with 34 seconds remaining on the clock by a score of 47-45.   The win was the first in six years against the Red Wolves.  “What a great college football game. And, boy, we still made things interesting,” said Texas State head coach Jake Spavital.

Texas State Losing Streak Extends to Six, November 7, 2020

Louisiana Lafayette Extends Streak Over Texas State, October 31, 2020

The Louisiana Rajin Cajuns (5-1, 3-1 SBC) defeated the Texas State Bobcats (1-7, 1-3 SBC) by a score of 44-34.  The win was Louisiana’s fourth on the road this season and extended its all-time record over the Bobcats to 7-0.  The score was not indicative of the competitive spirit displayed by the Bobcats, a team with 50 new players on its roster.  <more>

Texas State Finish Strong at Betsy Rawls Invitational, October 11, 2020

Matilda Cederholm, a native of Lomma, Sweden, played a very strong final round, shooting a 71 (-1) and finishing the 54-hole tournament at 232 (+16).  Teammate Halle Whitney, from Magnolia, Texas, birdied two of the first three holes and shot a respectable 78 (+6) in the final round.  Her 54-hole total was 237 (+21) over.  <more>

Epic Comeback Falls Short, September 12, 2020

Texas State Threaten SMU, September 5, 2020
