Texas State Football rebuilding under Coach Withers

In case you missed it, Austin American Statesman sports writer, Kirk Bohls, wrote a fair, balanced, and encouraging assessment of the 2016 Texas State Bobcats Football team.  I encourage you to read the entire article at: http://goo.gl/V9TuKP.   I’ll cite a few of my favorite parts of the article, with all credit due to Mr. Bohls.

What really opened my eyes was the football culture that he inherited from Coach Francionne.  Now I’m a big Coach Fran supporter, and I was very pleased at the way Coach Withers was only looking forward.  ” “I can’t tell you what the culture was,” Withers said, “but it wasn’t to our expectations.” ”

The transformation started with the first team meeting.  ” “That set the tone immediately,” safety Stephan Johnson said. “It was a wakeup call, something we needed.” “

Bohls credits “Withers’ tough love” and new strength coach Aaron Burkart’s “demanding conditioning regimen” as essential elements to building a winning football culture.  There may be fewer players on the field.  ” “Some guys weren’t all in,” said Ryan Melton, a senior offensive tackle who is in. “It was brutal. It was tough. It wasn’t fun.” ”

The Bobcats start their season on the road against Ohio State (September 3rd) and the University of Arkansas (September 17th).  We’ll get our first look at the team when they play University of Houston on September 24th.  Those games will foreshadow the entire 2016 season.
