Express Notch First Win of Season

The Round Rock Express earned their first win of the 2018 season in the final game of their series against the Memphis RedBirds.  The RedBirds had bettered the Express in the first four games.

Memphis began the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second inning by Carson Kelly.   The RedBirds threatened again in the third inning on a single by Max Schrock, followed by a walk to Carson Kelly.  Both running advanced on a wild pitch by Express pitcher Tyler Wagner, but Wagner worked out of trouble and retired the side.

Memphis tried to extend their lead in the fifth inning when Max Schrock attempted to score from second base on a single by Rangel Ravelo.   Schrock was tagged-out by catcher Cameron Rupp on a rocket throw by center fielder Jose Cardona.

The Express scored all their runs in the sixth inning, after Sean Gilmartin replaced Daniel Poncedeleon on the mound.  Ronald Guzman singled a line drive to left field, followed by a Willie Calhoun  singled to right field.  Trevor Plouffe then walked to load the bases.  Guzman scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Rupp.  All runners then scored on a home run to left field by Hanser Alberto.

Tyler Wagner started for the Express, pitching five innings of respectable baseball, but showing room for improvement.  In addition to allowing the home run to Kelly and a wild pitch, Wagner allowed 6 total hits, struck out 2 batters and walked
4.

Nick Gardewine earned the win, compliments of Hanser Alberto’s home run.  Gardewine pitched one inning, allowing two hits and one run.

Final score was Round Rock Express (1-4) 4, Memphis RedBird (4-1) 2.  The Express travel to Oklahoma City on an overnight bus to play the Blue.
