Austin FC Dominate Second Place Sporting KC

The Austin FC closed out its 2021 home schedule with a dominating 3-1 win over the playoff bound Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium. It was the fourth win for the Verde & Black in the last five games at home.

Austin scored its fastest goal in Club history, with Sebastián Driussi converting from close range just 30 seconds into the match.

“The first goal was a dream start and the focus and commitment were extremely good,” said Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff. “I talked about making it a big performance and making a big memory, and our guys came with that from the opening whistle.”

The Verde & Black doubled their lead in the 22nd minute when Julio Cascante headed home a  free kick delivery from Žan Kolmanič.

Jared Stroud added ATXFC’s  third and final goal of the match goal came in the 60th minute with a low shot to the far corner.

Driussi led the team with a goal, three total shots and a pair of shots on target. Jared Stroud scored a goal on two shots, and Diego Fagundez had two assists to pull within one assist of the MLS career 50/50 club (50 goals, 50 assists).

“(Stroud) was man of the match for me,” Wolff said. “I give him the ball in the locker room after the match and he was deserving for so many reasons. He’s not happy about not being in the lineup, but he doesn’t stop working.”

Sporting KC’s only score came in the 65th minute from Johnny Russell.

Midfielder Owen Wolff became the first Austin FC Homegrown Player to appear in an MLS match, entering as a substitute in second half stoppage time.

The Austin FC return to the road for its final away match of the 2021 season against the Portland Timbers on Sunday, November 7.
