Nebraska Takes Series with 4-0 Win Over Purdue

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-1) took the final game of the season-opening series against the Purdue Boilermakers (1-3) by a score of 4-0.  The Cornhuskers also took the series, 3 games to 1.  Nebraska leads the all-time series with 15 wins to Purdue’s 5. 

Shortstop Spencer Schwellenbach opened the scoring for Nebraska with a solo home run in the opening frame.  Jack Steil had a big day at the plate, driving a double down the leftfield line to score Max Anderson in the second inning and slamming a home run in the ninth to score Efry Cervantes. 

Justin Walker Jr. led the Boilermakers with 2 hits in 3 at-bats with a walk.  Miles Simington had 2 hits in 4 appearances. 

Starting Nebraska pitcher Jake Bunz threw for 3 scoreless innings.  Bunz worked his way out of trouble in the third inning after loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single.  Max Schreiber (1-1) was awarded the win for his 1.1 innings of work.  Schreiber allowed 3 hits, a walk and struck-out 1.  Nebraska used 7 pitchers in the outing, including position players Hallmark and Schwellenbach. 

Jett Jackson (0-1) suffered the loss for Purdue despite looking reasonably sharp on the mound for opening weekend.  Jackson gave-up 2 runs on 3 hits in 4.1 innings, striking out 10 and walking 3.  Nolan Daniel also pitched 2 solid innings of hitless relief, striking out 4.  Three additional hurlers were need to close out the game.
