Huskers Even Series with Purdue

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to the Purdue Boilermakers (1-1) to take the second game of the series, 7-2.  The matchup, played at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, had a non-conference feel in a year that will only have Big 10 play.

Both teams were quiet offensively until the third inning when the Huskers erupted, sending 11 batters to the plate and for 6 runs.  Nebraska added an insurance run in the sixth inning.  The Boilermakers attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the frame, adding 2 runs.

Nebraska was led by designated hitter Max Anderson who drove in 2 runs on 3 hits in 4 plate appearances.  Joe Aker also tallied 2 RBIs on 2 hits in 4 at-bats.  The big hitter for the Cornhuskers was lead-off batter Jaxon Hallmark, going 4-for-5 and scoring twice.

Purdue’s offensive sparkle came from Skyler Hunter and Ben Nisle, each going 2-for-4.  Miles Simington drove in 1 run on fly out to center field, as did Zac Facia on a ground-out to second base.

Nebraska pitcher Chance Hroch (1-0) had an impressive start to begin his senior season.  Hroch scattered 9 hits over 6 innings, allowing 2 runs, in route to a victory.  Cam Wynne pitched perfect relief to shut down Purdue in a 7-inning game #1 of a double header.

Purdue starting pitcher Calvin Schapira (0-1) suffered the lost for the Boilermakers.  Schapira allowed 6 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits in 2.2 innings.  Reliever Eric Hildebrand tossed 2 scoreless innings and Kyle Wade closed with 2.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits.
