Austin Retains Texas Cup, Flattens Houston

Mack Mason’s try in the sixth minute of play were all the points the Austin Gilgronis (6-2) needed to defeat the Houston SaberCats (4-4) and retain the Texas Cup.  The AG continued to rack up five additional tries to win by a final score of 43-to-5.

“The first half was more interesting than the second.  We had to take the fight to Houston because we knew they were going to be gritty; we knew they were going to be niggly, and we didn’t take it back,” said Austin Gilgronis head coach Sam Harris.  “That was our plan, we executed and that was very pleasing.”

Man-of-the-match Mack Mason was complimentary to his teammates, saying “I think the forwards really stood up tonight and laid a platform for the backs.”

“I think that since Mack and I have been here we’ve played the SaberCats three times and we only allowed one try,” said Harris. “The most pleasing thing to come out of tonight’s performance was the defense….  I think we restore some pride tonight and that makes me the happiest.”

Mason put the victory in perspective, “Playing the guys down the road is always more personal, and I think we saw that tonight.  Not taking a backward step and taking it to them.”
