USMNT Routs Grenada in Concacaf National League Match

The U.S. Men’s National Team began the defense of the its inaugural Concacaf Nations League title with a stunning rout of Grenada’s national team at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.  The final score was 5-0.

Jesus Ferreira led the Americans with four goals, becoming only the fifth player in USMNT history to score four goals in a match.  He also became the sixth youngest player in team history to score a hat trick.

Paul Arriola scored his tenth international goal and notched his sixth career assist on Ferreira’s second goal.

Kellyn Acosta, Luca de la Torre and Brenden Aaronson each has assists in the contest.

The USMNT were the heavy favorites, but the lopsidedness of the victory exceeded expectations.

The American out-shot the Grenadians 25-3, with the US producing 10 shots on-target to none by the visitors.  USMNT controlled the ball 68% of the time, making twice as many passes as the Grenadians, while completing nearly 90% of those passes.

Commenting on his performance, Ferreira said, “I’m just trying to focus on having a good first touch and playing well with my teammates — and that the goals will eventually come. Today, I think that showed.”

Ferreira didn’t let the night’s performance go to his head, saying, “I don’t want to think that much ahead as there’s a lot of good players on this team that can play that position… What I want to do is stay focused and keep working hard so I can earn minutes for the team. I don’t want to focus on the World Cup right now, just want to stay in the present.”

The USMNT travels to San Salvador to take on El Salvador on June 14 to Concacaf Nations Play.
