Texas Opens Big 12 Tourney with Clean Sheet

The University of Texas Longhorn women’s soccer team netted three goals in under nine minutes to soundly defeat the Kansas State Wildcats in the quarterfinal match of the Big 12 Championship. The final score was 4-0.

Holly Ward opened the scoring in the 26th minute, after Texas two goals called back for off-sides.  Ward tapped-in in a EmJ Cox header off a Lexi Missimo corner kick.

Cox found the back of net for her own two minutes later, also assisted by Missimo.

Missimo tallied her goal on a penalty kick in the 34th minute on a foul by goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer.

Trinity Byars added Texas’ final goal on a break-away set-up by Jilly Shimkin in the 70th minute.  Byars’ goal, her 16th of the season, tied two Texas records for most goals in a season and consecutive matches with a point.

The Longhorns easily controlled the Wildcats as measured by goals, shots (20-to-10), corner kicks (15-to-7) and fouls (6-to-11).  Byars, Cox and Shimkin contribute four shot each; Ward and Ashlyn Miller added three each.
