Local Hopeful Falls ATX Open First Round

The inaugural ATX Open began play on Tuesday with first round action at the Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas, with some surprising results. 

Top seed Magda Linette of Poland fell in three sets to the unseeded Russian Varvara Gracheva, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. 

Local darling, Peyton Stearns, a key member of the national championship team from the University of Texas, fell in three sets, with each set going to tie-breakers 

Erika Andreeva of Russian out-lasted Harriet Dart of Great Britain in a marathon match lasting over three and one-half hours, 7-4, 6-3, 7-6. 

Tournament favorite Sloane Stephens bested Taylor Townsend in straight sets 6-3. 6-3 . 

Anne-Lena Friedsam took Dayana Yastremska, 6-4, 6-4.  

Marta Kostyuk topped Dalma Galfi 7-5, 9-1.  

Madison Brengle defeated fellow American Louisa Chirico 6-2, 7-6. 

It took Anna Kalinskaya three sets to take Nao Hibino, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. 

And in the shortest match of the day, Anastasia Potapova easily handled Elizabeth Mandik 6-2, 6-0.
