UT Players Fall in ATX Quarterfinals
March 3, 2023Local University of Texas players faltered in Day 5 of the ATX Open in the singles and doubles quarterfinals.
In the rain-delayed doubles quarter finals, the second seed team of Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) and Aldila Sutjiad (Indonesia) defeated local favorites Charlotte Chavatipon (USA) and Sabina Zeynalova (Ukrane), 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. Chavatipon and Zeyvalova currently play for the University of Texas and were members of the 2022 NCAA national championship team.
Katie Volynets (USA) defeated local favorite Peyton Stearns (USA) 7-5, 6-3. Stearns helped the University of Texas win back-to-back NCAA National Championship team titles in 2021 and 2022.
Varvara Gracheva (Russia) defeated fifth seed Sloan Stephens (USA) 7-6, 6-3. Stephens was the 2017 US Open ChampionThe ATX Open is in Austin for its inaugural season. It is the city’s only professional tour-level tennis tournament, and is one of five women’s-only tour-level tennis tournaments in the country.
In the singles event, eighth seed Marta Kostyuk (Ukrane) defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam (Germany), 7-6, 6-2. Kostyuk is ranked 52nd in the world. Her best finish in 2023 was reaching the quarterfinals at Adelaide.
Fifth seed Danielle Collins (USA) defeated Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Collins reached the finals of the 2022 Australian Open.
