Fernandez Tops in Moto2 Practice

The Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, played host to the first day of practice for the Moto2 Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas on Friday, April 14th, 2023. The session saw a range of performances from the riders, with some showing impressive pace and others struggling to get to grips with the track.

At the top of the timesheets was Spanish rider Raul Fernandez, who set the fastest time of the session with a 2:09.724. Fernandez, who won the last race in Portugal, was
looking strong and confident throughout the session and will be hoping to carry
that form into qualifying and the race.

Behind Fernandez was Australian rider Remy Gardner, who was just 0.122s behind the Spaniard. Gardner, who currently leads the championship standings, was showing good pace and consistency and looks set to be a strong contender for the weekend.

Third fastest was Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi, who had also set the fastest time in the Moto3 practice session earlier in the day. Bezzecchi was just 0.169s off Fernandez’s
pace and will be looking to carry his momentum from the Moto3 session into the
Moto2 race.

Other notable performances in the session came from British rider Sam Lowes, who was fourth fastest, and Spanish rider Augusto Fernandez, who was fifth fastest. Lowes, who
won the season-opening race in Qatar, was looking strong and confident on the
track, while Fernandez was showing good pace and consistency.

Overall, the first practice session in Austin was an indication of the competitiveness of the
Moto2 field. With a range of riders showing strong pace and consistency, it’s
sure to be an exciting and unpredictable race come Sunday.
