Austin FC Scores, But Still Can’t Win

The Austin FC ended a 394-minute scoreless streak,  but defensive lapses for the second consecutive match prevented them from doing no better than a 2-2 draw.  Austin FC has gone six matches without a win.

San Jose’s Jackson Yueill opened the scoring in the 21st minute after being unmarked by Alex Ring.

Emiliano Rigoni got his first MLS goal in the 40th minute of play, breaking a team-wide scoreless streak spanning over five matches.   Dani Pereira set up the goal with a long cross to the far side of the box.  Rodney Redes header across the goal found a wide-open Rigoni who made the finish.  The match was Rigoni’s 19thfor Austin.

San Jose reclaimed the lead in the 75th minute.  Dani Pereira’s turnover allowed Cristian Espinoza to drive down-pitch and feed Jeremy Ebobisse for a goal-scoring header.

Sebastián Driussi tied the match on an opportunistic 78th-minute goal.  It was his first league goal since the 2023 opener.  Driussi collected the rebound from a  Leo Väisänen header for an easy score.

“There was a lot of progress in this performance for sure,” said Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff.  “But it was disappointing. It was a performance to build off and a performance worthy of three points (with a win). Ties at home are tough. And we had many more clear-cut chances than them.”

Austin FC defender Leo Väisänen put it more simply: “We’re just not clicking.”

“The first chunk (of the season) was a slow start,” Wolff said. “The next little period becomes a little more of a grind. We’ve got to push for some good results going forward, without a doubt.”
