Texas Over UTRGV, One for the Record Books

Trinity Byars, in only her junior year, set a program record with her fourth career hat trick, as the University of Texas Longhorn thrashed the University of Texas Rio Grande Vaqueros, 5-to-0.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of being a broken record,” said Texas head coach Angela Kelly on Trinity Byars’ milestone. “She just finds open spaces and her teammates look for her and she’s just clinical with her finishes.”

“(It) all kind of happened so fast, really. Our midfielders continue to just put me in great scoring positions with their passes, so I can just tap the ball in for a goal. I mean, yeah, (it) is pretty cool, but I feel it’s nothing something that you really dwell on. It’s a pretty cool accomplishment to have, but we just have to keep going (and focus on our season),” said Byars on her record.

Byars’ historic moment came in the 15th minute of play as she beat RGV goaltender Emma Loov from six yards out.

Byars passed Kelsey Carpenter (2004-07) for third place on the Longhorns’ career points leaderboard with her six points on the evening.  Byars is just 12 points behind Kelly McDonald (2001-04) for second place.

All of Byars’ goal were set up by Lexi Missimo.  Missimo also assisted on Avery Clark’s goal in the 46th minute, and scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

Missimo tied her career high for assists in a single match with four on the evening.  Missimo needs just two more assists to pass Kelly Wilson (2001-04) to become the program’s new all-time leader in career assist.

With her assist on Byars’ first goal, Missimo became the first student-athlete in program history to be credited with an assist in five consecutive matches. She becomes the only student-athlete in program history to be credited with multiple four-assist matches during their Longhorn career.
