Key Take-Away’s from Vic Schaefer Press Conference

Two key take-away’s from Vic Schaefer’s press conference:  Insight to recruiting, Coach is big KISS fan.

“It just really exciting when you’re a coach here at a program, like this at the University of Texas, you have so much to offer and sell to a young person.  It’s just a great time to be here at the University of Texas when you’re when you’re at a place with so much prestige, everywhere you look at.  From an education standpoint, top 10 in the country….  When you have that type of ranking, it’s not because you pretty buildings on your campus.  It’s the guts that’s in those buildings that’s what makes up a ranking…. It’s really an incredible place.  From an athletic stand point, you know the proof is in the pudding.  With all the championships that have been won here recently, not to mention throughout the course of time.  It’s a place were only elite live.”

“For us, I’ll be honest, it’s all about relationships.  We haven’t changed in that regard.  That’s the thing I think about, when you talk about the kids we’re recruiting currently, and whatever class you want to talk about.  My staff is so good about building the relationship piece… For us here at Texas, in women’s basketball, we’re all about the relationship piece.  My staff and I really believe that that’s where it starts and ends.  Certainly, you have some other factors that go into it now a days, NIL and the portal…  I  believe in the kids that I got.  The young kids need development, they need to play, I think they going to be able to play.  I’m a guy that believe in recruiting freshman…  If we can recruit them, retain them, and develop them, that’s the key to success.  For us, that’s always been our philosophy and will continue to be.”

“That’s what you want to do.  You want to continue to build it from the ground up, and then you get to where you’re just rolling out four, and rolling four more in, and everybody moves up the ladder….  That’s what I think you do in any program, no matter what the sport, you got to have kids ready to step into their next opportunity. That’s our job as coaches to get those kids ready.”

Coach is a big KISS fan.  “I won’t have my face painted, but I’ll be on the front row (for the concert at the Moody Center).”
