BYU Advances to Finals in One-sided Match

The Brigham Young University Cougars easily defeated the  University of Central Florida Golden Knight, 4-to-1, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Conference women’s soccer championship.  BYU faces the University of Texas in Championship finals on Saturday. 

BYU controlled nearly aspect of the match, besting UCF 29-to-14 in total shots and 11-to-5 in corner kicks.  Despite appearances, BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood did not run the score up, going to the bench to replace all starters, including the goalkeeper. 

BYU midfielder Olivia Wade-Katoa led the Cougars, scoring the first two goals of the match.  Olivia Smith setup Wade-Katoa’s first goal in the 27th minutes.  Her second goal in the 34th minutes was assisted by Mozingo Brecken.  Wade-Katoa has ten goals and eight assists on the season. 

Brecken added her own goal five minutes later, assisted by Zoe Jacobs.  The goal was Brecken’s 11th of the season. 

The Cougars final goal on a cross by Rachel McCarthy and finished by Ellie Wlabruch’s header. 

The Golden Knight’s only goal came on a penalty kick in the 79th minute converted by Katie Bradley.
