Texas’ Bigs Too Much for Louisiana Tech

Vic Schaefer’s mantra has always been “you win with guard play.”  Tonight, Schaefer’s Texas Longhorns used guard play to setup a massive inside attack, giving the Longhorns a lopsided 96-to-44 win over Louisiana Tech. 

Texas guards generated 18 assists to set up centers Taylor Jones and Khadija Faye for a combined 30 points, 12 rebounds.  All total, the Longhorns tallied 54 points from the paint and 24 second chance points. 

“What she (Taylor Jones) and Hadi (Khadija Faye) bring to the table for us at the five (position) is really, really special,” said Schaefer.    “It makes life easier when Hadi and Taylor inside can be a force down there, and people have to respect them.” 

The Longhorns played an exceptional first half, holding LA Tech to 19 points while putting up 54 points themselves. 

“That’s about as good as we’ve played the first half this year,” said Schaefer.   “I was disappointed, a little bit, in our (second half) effort.  I though we left it in the locker room coming out, but picked it back up in the fourth quarter.” 

Jones led all players with 25 points and eight rebounds.  Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda came off the bench to add 15 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes on the court.  Shaylee Gonzales and Amina Muhammad each added 12 points.  Rori Harmon notched eight points and 11 assists.
