Texas Women Down Oral Roberts on Kids Day

The #10 University of Texas Longhorns women’s basketball leaned heavily on their offense to defeat the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles, 112-to-74.  The game was played before 7200 screaming grade school students visiting the 40 Acres.

“Well, if you liked offense that was a pretty fun game to watch.  For me, I probably didn’t have as much fun as a lot of people,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.  “I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a team score 61, but then give up 50 (in a half).  I don’t think that’s ever happened in my career.”

Diving deeper into the defensive challenges, Schaefer offered, “I thought we had some problems with continuity with substitution.  We obviously had some issues in transition defensively, on the half court with some back door cuts.  It just seemed like we were stuck in mud.”

Texas held ORU to just 24 points in the first half, while putting up 51 of their own.   The Golden Eagles nearly matched their first half production in the third quarter with 21 points, while Texas produced a massive 37 points.   ORU out-scored the Longhorns with 29-to-24 in the final frame.

Offensively, Texas was led by Taylor Jones with 27 points  and 15 rebounds.  Jones tied a UT program record for most field goal makes with a miss, going 11-for-11.

Rori Harmon registered her 14th career double-digit assist game with 13 assists, in addition to ten points.

Three additional Longhorn tallied in double-digits: Madison Booker (17), Shylee Gonzales (16) and Amina Muhammad.

Texas scored 70 points in the paint and held a 70-34 advantage in paint points.  The Longhorns held a 32-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Texas forced 22 Oral Roberts turnovers. Texas shot 61.5 percent from the field and the team is averaging 51.9 percent shooting on the season. The Longhorns tallied 27 assists for game.

Oral Roberts was led by Taleyah Jones with 23 points and two rebounds.  Ruthie Udoumoh added 13 points, eight rebounds and two assist.

Next up, Texas faces the University of Connecticut Huskies in the Jimmy V Classic on Sunday.
