Texas Out-Toughs Kansas

The University of Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team defeated the University of Kansas Jayhawks, 91-to-56, in one of the most physical games the Longhorns have played this season.  One Kansas player fouled-out, two committed four fouls, and four Texas players committed four fouls.

“They’re just tough competitors.  And I don’t throw that word around a lot, tough.  In fact, when I throw it around to them, sometimes I’m throwing it around like they need to be tough,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.    “I do think that when they play like tonight, they got a chance (at reaching the NCAA Tournament final four).

Aaliyah Moore led Texas with 17 points, shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field including a three-pointer.  Moore pulled down four rebounds and committed no turnovers.

Commenting on her performance, Moore said, “Surrounded by great people, you know, you play great.  So shout out to my team.” The day was also Moore’s birthday.

Madison Booker followed with 15 points, including six assist and five rebounds.  Khadija Faye owned the boards, pulling in three offensive and five defensive rebounds.  Faye added 14 points.

Texas controlled the inside game, out-scoring Kansas 36-to-26 from the paint.  The team shot a remarkable 59% from the field and 64% from beyond the arch.

Turnover and free throws continue to haunt Texas.  The team went 12-for-20 (60%) from the
charity stripe, and committed 17 turnovers.

Texas effectively contained a prolific Kansas offense, holding them to 33% from the field and just 8% (1-for-13) from distance.

S’Mya Nichols led the Jay Hawks with 14 points and five assists. Zakiyah Franklin added 11 points and four rebounds.

Schaefer was busting with praise for his team, saying, “these kids went out tonight, just absolutely played their hearts out.  They continued to compete.  It’s not easy.  Winning is not easy and it’s sure not easy when you don’t have your whole compliment of teammates that you’ve been practicing with and working with.  They’re amazing.  I’m so proud of them, and happy
for them.”
