Austin FC Disappoint in Home Opener
February 24, 2024Saturday’s home opener between the Austin FC and Minnesota United FC was a continuation of last year’s disappointment. Austin fell to Minnesota by a final score of 2-to-1.
Austin could not execute. They possessed the ball 52% of the match and completed 30% more passes, but were out-shot 19-6 in total, and 10-2 on target. One of the few saving graces was goalkeeper Brad Stuver’s performance, making eight saves against those ten shots.
To make matters worse, Minnesota was playing with an interim coach and without their best player.
Austin, too, was without their best, as Sebastian Driussi sat out the match nursing a strained ham string.
Minnesota’s Robin Lod claimed the lead in the 34th minute with a left-footed shot from the middle of the box. Despite their many attempts, the Loons waited until one minute into second half stoppage time to score again, compliments of Alejandro Bran.
Guilherme Biro, a new addition to the team, put Austin on the scoreboard in the final minute of the stoppage time.
