Washingtons State Comes from Behind to Take Kansas
February 24, 2024The Washington State University Cougars baseball team defeated the University of Kansas Jayhawks, 5-to-4, in day two of the 2024 Karbach Round Rock Classic. The Cougars scored four un-answered runs in final three innings to secure win.
Washington State opened and closed their game against Kansas with long balls.
Alan Shibley put the Cougars on the scoreboard with a solo shot in the top of the first inning,
Kansas followed with two runs on Lenny Ashby’s home run in the second inning, and another pair of runs in the sixth inning on Ty Wisdom’s double.
WSU trailed 4-to-1 going into the seventh inning when Jacob Morrow’s pinch-hit single in the seventh inning brough home Will Cresswill. Cresswill reach first on a single and advanced to third on Cole Cramer’s double.
Joey Karmer’s three blast to left field in the eighth inning, bringing home Kyle Russell and Casen Taggart, secured a WSU win. Russell reached base on a walk and Taggart on an infield single.
WSU starting pitcher Connor Wilford allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings for no decision. Relief pitcher Kaden Wickersham took home the win, allowing no runs and one hit in three innings.
Kansas starter Dominic Voegele gave up one run on six hits in six innings of work. Relief pitcher Grant Adler suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
