Texas Defense Leads in Win Over BYU

The night was special.  The Texas women’s basketball team played BYU for the first time as a member of the Big 12 Conference.  They said good bye to graduate student Shaylee Gonzales and senior Khadija (Hadi) Faye.  They collected $167,500 in donation to the Neighborhood Longhorn Program.  They wished Vic Schaefer a happy birthday.  And they defeated BYU 71-to-46.

BYU went toe-to-toe with Texas in the first quarter with each team putting up 14 points.  The Longhorn defense  came through in the second quarter holding BYU to just eight points.  Texas had a run where they held the Cougars 0-4 shooting and two turnovers in six straight possessions.

“We weren’t very good offensively the first half.  We really struggled to execute and they had a lot to do with that.  But, while we were struggling on offense, we were defending and I think that’s the thing,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.  “I thought the second half we did a much better job.”

Texas regrouped at the halftime and took control, out-scoring BYU 23-to-10 in the third quarter and 19-to-14 in the final frame.

Madison Booker led Texas with 20 points  and five assists. Aaliyah Moore put up 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. And Taylor Jones and DeYona Gaston scored 13 points each.

Texas won the turnover battle 22-9, and had three times the second chance points as the Cougars, outscoring the 21-7.
