Yuan Yue Wins in all Chinese ATX Open Finals
March 3, 2024No. 8 seed Yuan Yue defeated friend and countrywoman, No. 6 seed Wan Xiyu, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win the ATX Open and her first WTA Tour singles title. The match marked the first time two Chinese player met in a WTA Tour final in North America.
The ATX Open is part of the WTA Tour and is listed as a WTA 250 tournament. The event is in its second year and is the largest women’s professional event in Austin.
Yue reached the final by defeating Arina Rodionova, Taylor Townsend, Yafan Want and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. This was her first final since a runner-up showing in Seoul in 2023.
Wang took an early 2-0 lead to start the match. Yuan recovered and won the next four games and served-out to take the set 6-4.
Yuan momentum continued into the second set, taking a 5-2 lead, and having three match points on Wang’s serve. The crowd, always on the side of an underdog, fell behind Wang, seeing her holding serve and eventually claw back to 5-5 draw. Each player won-out on service, forcing a tie-breaker.
Yuan regained her composure and took a 6-1 lead in the breaker. The crowd again rally behind Wang, seeing her deny Yuan three match points. Yuan eventually prevailed to win her first single title.
The double finals saw the team of Olivia Gadecki and Olivia Nicholls defeating Katarzyna Kawa and Bibiane Schoofs in two sets.
Gadecki and Nicholls made it look too easy, taking the first set 6-2. But Kawa and Schoofs battled back in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 game lead. Gadecki and Nicholls responded by winning the next six games to win their first tournament together 6-2, 6-4.
