March 5, 2024The University of Texas Longhorn baseball team suffered an embarrassing 9-to-2 loss to rival Texas A&M University Aggies before a sold-out crowd of 8,060.
The Aggies struck in the top of the first inning with Braden Montgomery’s home run to right center field, scoring Jace LaViolette.
The Longhorn clawed back a run in the fourth inning with Jack O’Dowd’s sacrifice fly to center field, plating Kimble Schuessler. Schuessler reached base on a walk, moved to second on a throwing error and advance to third base on a throwing error.
The Aggies reclaimed a two-run lead in the fifth inning with Hayden Schott driving in Laviolette.
A&M put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh inning. An error by Texas leftfielder Porter Brown allowed Gavin Grahovac to cross the plate and moved two runners into scoring position. Ted Burton’s sacrifice fly brough home Braden Montgomery, and Jackson Appel’s home run plated Hayden Schott.
The Longhorn mounted a weak response in the bottom of the frame with Peyton Powell bringing home Dee Kennedy.
The Aggies had the last word in the eighth inning. Singles by Grahovac and LaViolette, and a walk to Montgomery loaded the bases. Schott’s single, combined with an error by right fielder Max Belyeu, allowed two runs to score.
Texas starting pitcher Tanner Witt (0-1) took home the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 3.1 inning on the mound. He struck-out three batters and walked one. The Longhorns used five relief pitchers in the effort.
Texas A&M starting pitcher Chris Cortez went three innings, allowing one run on two hits, for no decision. Relief pitcher Evan Aschenbeck (1-0) earned the win, going 3.2 innings, giving-up one run on two hits, striking-out two and walking one batter.
