Driussi’s Late Goal Leads Austin Past Houston
May 15, 2024Sebastián Driussi’s goal in the 87th minute lifted the Austin FC to a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo FC. The win was Austin’s fourth consecutive at home, its fifth clean sheet of season, and its second win over Houston this season as part of the Copa Tejas series.
By most every measure, the match should have gone to Houston, or at best, ended in a draw. Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff called his team’s performance “sloppy at times,” and his team was fatigued in the last 20 minutes of the match.
But luck fell in the home team’s favor when Driussi collected the rebound on Gyasi Zardes’ header and found the back of the net with a header. The goal was Driussi’s fourth of the season, leading the team.
Austin had its opportunities in the first half, with Diego Rubio hit a shot hitting the crossbar in the 1st minute and Alex Ring’s shot bounced off the right post in the 21st minute. Driussi nearly tallied a goal in the 42nd minute in a one-on-one close in against goaltender Steve Clark.
At the other end of the pitch, Brad Stuver continued his strong run of form with several smart saves, most notably on Amine Bassi and Sebastian Kowalczyk.
Goalkeeper Brad Stuver earned the clean sheet, facing down 17 shots, six on-target.
