Whitcomb Leads Space Cowboys Over Express
August 5, 2024The Sugar Land Space Cowboys, led by Shay Whitcomb, defeated the Round Rock Express by a score of 4-to-1 to take the series five games to one. Whitcomb went 4-for-5, including a home run, with four runs batted in.
Sugar Land starting pitcher Ryan Gusto earned the win, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings and holding the Express to four hits. Round Rock starter Ryan Garcia took home the loss, despite a very solid performance in his first Triple-A game. Garcia allowed two runs on four hits, striking out eight batters while walking one in 6 innings of work.
Whitcomb scored the game’s first runs with a home run in the sixth inning, driving home Jesus Bastidas. Bastidas reached base on a walk.
Whitcomb doubled the Space Cowboys’ lead in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded single, plating Cooper Hummel and Omar Narvaez. Hummel reached base on a single and Narvaez on a field’s choice.
The Express scored their only run of the game when Trevor Hauver single and Jax Biggers scored on a field error by center fielder Quincy Hamilton.
Round Rock’s Blaine Crim extended his 28 consecutive on-base streak with a single, which is the second-longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League.
