Austin FC Fall Flat When Least Afforded
August 31, 2024The Austin FC picked the worse time to disengaged from a match. Sitting on the outside of the playoff window looking in, Austin fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0, making their bid for a playoff spot more and more remote.
The difference in the match was Pedro Vite’s goal in the 70th minute, coming from a poor clearance by Austin defender Mikkel Desler, leaving goalkeeper Brad Stuver flat-footed.
Plainly put, Austin went through the motions but didn’t appear to be present. They fail to generate a single shot-on-goal and were eclipsed in total shots 20-to-7. The only player to stop the loss from being more one-sided was Stuver, making four saves.
Austin allowed Vancouver to dictate the play for most of the match, and failed to convert on scoring opportunities.
“I think we had a lot of poor performances tonight,” said Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff. “We had six or seven guys who performed well below what they had been lately.”
To make matters worse, this sorry performance was before a home crowd, who, in the past, lifted the team up when they needed help. Even the diehard Austin fans will have a hard getting excited going forward.
