Texas Comes from Behind Against San Diego State

Teams don’t often catch the University of Texas Longhorn women’s soccer team off guard, but the San Diego State Aztecs did, jumping to an early 1-0 lead.  Texas responded with three unanswered goals, giving head coach Angela Kelly her 300th career victory.

San Diego State’s Emma Gaines-Ramos found the back of the net on an Olivia Sekimoto pass, giving the Aztecs the lead with under four minutes into the match.  San Diego’s goal was the first allowed by Longhorn netminder Mia Justus this season.

It took Texas just over two minutes to even the score when Amalia Villarreal collected a Madison Haugen cross to bury the ball from the left side of the box.

The Longhorns doubled their lead in the waning minutes of the first half when Carly Montgomery beat San Diego keeper on a header from Lexi Missimo’s corner.  The goal was Montgomery’s first of the season and the second of her career.

Missimo added a goal of her own in the final five minutes of the match, collecting a pass from Ashlyn Miller and beating San Diego keeper Alexa Madueno on a 1-on-1 opportunity.

The goal was Missimo’s 49th in her tenure at Texas.  Missimo, who already holds the program record for career points, upped her career total to 152 points.

As in prior matches, Texas’ offense shell-shocked the opponents, out-shooting them 26-8 in total shots.
