Texas State Turns a Six-Year Tide, Clobbers UTSA

For the first time in the six-year history of the IH-35 rivalry, the Texas State University Bobcats defeated the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners, 49-10.  The only thing that could have stopped Texas State was a restraining order.

A sellout crowd of 28,000 fans watched the Texas State put-up 504 offensive yards while holding UTSA to 334 yards.

The Bobcats kept the Roadrunners out of the end zone for the entire first half while scoring TDs in five of their eight possessions.

It took Texas State two possessions to settle in, throwing an interception on the third play of the game.  After that, the team was seemingly unstoppable.  Quarterback Jordan McCloud tallied the first two touchdowns on runs of 17- and 2-yards.  McCloud then found Chris Dawn Jr. on a 46-yard touchdown-pass. Deion Hankins and Lincoln Pare put-up the final two touchdowns of the half on runs of 2- and 45-yards, respectively.

The Bobcats took a 35-3 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

A change of quarterback by UTSA, Eddie Lee Marburger for Owen McCown, and perhaps the anticipated outcome by Texas State, made for a lower-scoring second half.

The Bobcats bookend the second half with a 21-yard passing touchdown to Dawn and a 33-yard running touchdown by Pare.  In between was a 2-yard UTSA passing TD from Marburger to Willie McCoy.

Texas State played a very clean game, turning over the ball just once, and committing only three penalties for 19 yards.  They averaged 4.3 yards per touch on the ground and completing 18 of 27 attempts in the air for an average of 11.4 yards per attempt.

UTSA had a more challenging game, turning the ball over twice, and committing ten penalties,  giving up 73 yards.  They averaged 2.7 yards per carry and went 24-for-50 in the air, averaging five yard per attempt.

The only thing missing from the game was the Texas State fans storming the field, tearing down the goal post, and throwing them in the San Marcos river.  Perhaps next time.
