Texas Cruises Past SEMO, May Have What it Takes

Vic Schaefer’s first post-game press conference of the 2024-25 season was unlike any other he has had in his four seasons at the Texas: grateful, relaxed, cheerful, appreciative, and fun.  And it wasn’t because his team beat Southeast Missouri State University, 119 – 47.

As Schaefer put it, “I’m really blessed, we’re very blessed at Texas, to have the guard play that we have, and with our two five-players, the way they played today.”

With four solid guards, Rori Harmon, Shay Holle, Lalia Phelia and Bryanna Preston, and two rugged centers, Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre, Texas will be a force to be reconned with.  Combine this is Madison Booker playing in her natural position of forward, the Longhorns may be unstoppable.

Schaefer called-out both freshman Preston and junior transfer Oldacre.

“If you didn’t see Preston, it’s because she was going so doggone fast.  It’s hard to keep up with her.  She’s really good, obviously, in the open floor and is fun to watch, as well,” said Schaefer.

Oldacre scored a career high 21 points as well as pulling down 14 rebounds.

“I didn’t even know I scored that much, I didn’t even know I rebound that much, as well,” said Oldacre.  “I have one job, that’s to be the five-player that coach wants to do.  And I felt like I did that today. That’s my motivation.”

Booker also notched a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Jones impressed with 18 points and five steals, and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda added a remarkable six takeaways on top of six points.

“Fun day for our kids.  I know the coach, he’ll find something wrong with today,” said Schaefer.  “If I had to pick on something, it would be that (the press), it would be our turnovers.”

Texas committed 19 turns.
