Longhorns Rest on First Half Laurels against Lamar

Two different Texas Longhorn women’s basketball teams took on the Lamar Cardinals: one team that dominated the first half and the other team eked out a draw in the second.  The Longhorns won, 95-58, but they showed none of the toughness that should come from the #4 team in the nation.

Texas dominated Lamar in the first half, taking a 51-14 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

They should have recorded whatever words Lamar head coach Aqua Franklin used at the break,  because they worked.  Franklin previously played for Texas head coach Vic Schaefer at Texas A&M and coached for him at Mississippi State.

Lamar scored nearly as many points in the third quarter as they did in the preceding two, and out-scored Texas in the frame 25-24.  Texas edged-out Lamar in the final quarter, 20-19.

Akasha Davis led Lamar with 14 points and Sabria Dean added 13.  Shay Holle led the Texas starters with 15 points and Justice Carlton came off the bench to add 15.

The biggest worry for Texas, other the team’s second half absence, was Rori Harmon leaving the court in the third quarter in severe pain.  Harmon returned later.  Schaefer said in the post-game press conference that she sustained an ankle injury.  Harmon score eight points with eight assists and three turnovers in 18 minutes of play.

Also missing on the court was Madison Booker.  Schaefer said Booker’s status was day-to-day.
