Texas Takes Southern in Dissatisfying Win

You can call the Texas Longhorns’ 97-39 win over the Southern Jaguars a blow-out win, but you cann’t call it a good win.

“We played okay.  I don’t know if we played very well.  I wasn’t pleased with our offensive execution or, I don’t know what you want to call it, chemistry, cohesiveness,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer after the game.

Assessing the game solely by the numbers you would have though the Longhorns played well.

Individually, Taylor Jones led all players with a double-double, 19 points and 11 rebounds, her 20th career double-double.  And Madison Booker added 17 points, her 40th career double figure scoring game.   And Kyla Oldacre recorded her fifth double digit scoring game of the season with 16 points.

As a team, the Longhorns outrebounded their opponent 49-23, holding a 19-1 advantage in second chance points.  And they held Southern to 12-of-51 (23.5 percent) shooting from the field.  And Texas set a program record for free-throws made in a game with 36.  And the  defense tallied 10 total blocks.

But it’s not so much the numbers when you’re playing a lesser team, it’s how you played to achieve those number that really counts.

“Always exciting, happy for a win, but I think there’s so much work to be done. We got to get everybody playing hard,” said Schaefer.  “I have four playing hard on defense, and they always find the one that isn’t.  It’s like a plumber, if you get one leaked fixed, then you got another one.”

It’s back to the practice court for Schaefer’s Longhorns to fix that leak before traveling to take on Richmond on Sunday.
