Texas Under-performs in Blow-out Win
December 29, 2024You can tell in the warmups how the University of Texas Longhorns women’s basketball will play during the game. This afternoon the team was slow to gather on to the court and casual in their approach; so was their play against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros. The Longhorns won, 94-35, but the team played like a high school JV squad.
“The score doesn’t indicate it, truly, I didn’t think we played very well. I was disappointed in some of our players. I didn’t think they were ready to play. Didn’t think they played very hard,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer.
Texas held RVG to single digit-points in three of the four quarters, but the second quarter play was pathetic. The Vaquero’s put-up half of their points in a single frame, shooting 42% from the field, 67% from distance, and drawing six of their eight total fouls for five points.
I expected Schaefer to explode; surprisingly, he held his composure throughout the game and in the post-game press conference.
There were some bright spots for the Horns.
Kyla Oldacre led all players with 21 points, going 6-for-6 from the field and 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Most noteable was a massive charging foul she drew, knocking herself and RGV’s Gianna Angiolet off their feet.
“Coach says it only takes one spark to light up the team, so I my try to that when I can,” said Oldacre after the game.
Schaefer was also very complimentary of freshman Breanna Preston. Preston tallied nine points, three assists and two rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor.
“The kid (Preston) is electric. As I told her, sitting on the bench, her athleticism, quickness, speed is what allows her to separate herself from everybody else. Of course, her vision. She sees the court so well,” said Schaefer.
Texas hopes to learn from this “bad” win as they open SEC play on the road against Oklahoma on Thursday.
