Longhorns Drain the Crimson Tide
January 9, 2025One of Texas Longhorn’s head coach Vic Schaefer’s go-to lines is: “If you’re not ready to play, you won’t get beat, you’ll get embarrassed.” And that’s exactly what happened as Texas defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide, 84-40.
Alabama didn’t get beat; they were embarrassed. The Longhorn held the Tide to single-digit points for the first three quarters, when they took their foot off Alabama’s neck and played down-roster players.
The 44-point win is Texas’ largest margin of victory against an AP Top 25 team in program history.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my team. We had some kids that played really hard tonight. Really were locked in on the scout,” said Schaefer after the game. “We had an inside game tonight with Taylor (Jones) and Kyla (Oldacre). Rori, again, did a great job seeing the floor and pushing the ball. We were opportunistic in transition.”
Madison Booker led all players with 21 points in 18 minutes on the court for her sixth 20+ point performance this season. Jones had the game’s only double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Rori Harmon added ten points with six assists. Oldacre pulled down five offensive boards and added nine points.
Alabama’s Zaay Green, an All-SEC candidate, was effectively contained by the collective Texas defense. Green was held to five points and was forced into nine turnovers.
Alabama committed 20 turnovers, resulting in 33 points for Texas. The Longhorns had nine turnovers for five second-chance points by Alabama.
