Texas Wins SEC Home Opener Over Arkansas

The University of Texas Longhorn women’s basketball team defeated the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, 90-56, in their first home game in the SEC.  The Longhorns are 2-0 in SEC play, having defeated #10 Oklahoma on Thursday.

“We didn’t play very good, to be honest with you.  I’m kicking myself; I took it a little easy on them on Friday.  We just don’t handle easy well,” said Texas head coach Vic Schaefer on his team’s performance.   “What I don’t feel good about is it’s an eleven-point game with 3:32 going into the third quarter.  That concerns me.  Our offensive execution was poor.  We weren’t doing what I wanted us to do, which was attack and turn the floor.”

Aside from Schaefer’s concerns, Texas played well enough to win, shooting 44% from the floor, 33% from distance, compliments of Jordan Lee, and 73% from the charity stripe. Six Longhorns scored in double-digits.  Surprising, Madison Booker was only 1-for-9 from the floor.

Texas forced Arkansas into 25 turnovers and held a 32-8 advantage in points off turnovers. The Longhorns outrebounded Arkansas 46-27 and grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 28 second chance points.

Aaliyah Moore led all players with 17 points and 14 rebounds, her eighth career double-double.

“Thank goodness she showed up and played today,” said Schaefer.

Rori Harmon added 12 points and six assists.  Harmon now has 602 career assists and is five from moving into second on the Longhorns all-time list.

Kyla Oldacre got her first career start for Texas and scored in double figures for the ninth time this season and third straight game with 10 points.  Oldacre drew nine of the 25 fouls committed against Texas.

“She gets hung on like clothes on a clothesline,” said Schaefer.  She’s getting a lot of attention and getting touched a lot.”
