Texas Over Texas A&M in Lone Star Showdown

Texas women’s basketball head coach Vic Schaefer had many great memories as an assistant coach at Texas A&M.  Those good memories continued, albeit wearing different school colors, with a 70-50 win at College Station.

“I though the first half we were really good.  The second half I didn’t think we were very good,” said Schaefer after the game.

One of things he didn’t like in the second half was rebounding.  “We gave up a ton of second chance points.  I though we got out-toughed at the post position.  I think we got out-toughed on second chance points, offensive rebounds.”

The Longhorns hoovered up all the momentum in the opening frame, holding the Aggies to 12 points while putting up 22 points.  Momentum continued in Texas’ favor in the second quarter, giving Texas a 38-21 advantage at the half.

Either Texas took their foot off the gas, or A&M felt the sting of their first half performance, but the third quarter went to the Aggies, 15-13.  Texas reclaimed control  in the final frame, compliments of a 10-point scoring run midway through the period, and took home a 20-point victory.

Texas’ big-picture stats looked respectable, shooting 53% from the floor, 36% from distance and 80% from the charity stripe.  They committed only seven turnovers and dished out 22 assists.

Texas’ Madison Booker led all players with 17 points, 13 rebound and five assists.  Rori Harmon tallied 12 points, five assists and one rebound.  Shay Holle (12) and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda (10) each scored in double-digits.

Texas effectively contained A&M, holding them to 38% shooting from the field, 30% from distance and 46% from the free-throw line.  Jada Malone and Janae Kent each put-up 12 points for the Aggies. Lauren Ware came close to a double, posting 11 points and nine rebounds.

“The good thing, I told them, we get to learn from a 20-point win,” said Schaefer.
