Austin FC Defense Earns Point in Scoreless Draw
April 5, 2025Austin FC continued their impressive defensive start to the season, posting their fourth clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against the Portland Timbers at Q2 Stadium on Saturday. Austin’s defense, which leads the Western Conference with a mere three goals conceded in seven matches, once again proved formidable. However, the offensive unit struggled to capitalize, failing to score for the third time this year.
Head coach Nico Estevez has prioritized a strong defensive foundation, and the backline of Guilherme Biro, Brendan Hines-Ike, Oleksandr Svatok, and Jon Gallagher effectively shut down a Portland attack that had been potent in recent games. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver had a relatively quiet night, facing few significant threats as the Timbers registered a modest 0.57 expected goals.
While acknowledging the offensive challenges, Estevez emphasized the importance of the unbeaten streak. “While we’re growing, it’s important to note that we didn’t lose and kept our unbeaten streak,” he said. Despite the offseason acquisitions of forwards Myrto Uzuni and Brandon Vazquez, the team’s five-goal tally through seven games raises some questions about the attack’s productivity. Osman Bukari, who had a strong showing in the previous match, was largely contained by the Timbers’ defense.
“I think we rushed a little bit (on some chances) and some of the actions in the final third need to improve,” Estevez conceded. While the defense has provided a solid platform, Austin FC will need to find more consistency in front of goal to fully capitalize on their strong start to the season.
