Verde Vanquished: Austin FC Suffers Historic Home Defeat
May 3, 2025Things appear to be taking a turn for the worse for Austin FC. The Verde and Black suffered their third loss in four matches Saturday night, falling to Minnesota United by a decisive 3-0 scoreline at Q2 Stadium. The defeat marked the largest margin of loss at home in the club’s brief history, raising serious questions about the team’s recent form.
Gone are the days when Austin FC boasted one of the stingiest defenses in Major League Soccer. Over their last four outings, the team has conceded a worrying ten goals, a stark contrast to their solid defensive displays in the season’s opening months. The focus and tenacity that once defined their backline have seemingly evaporated, replaced by costly errors and a general lack of sharpness.
The unraveling began in the 22nd minute with an uncharacteristic blunder from Austin’s usually reliable goalkeeper, Brad Stuver. A tame shot from Minnesota’s Joaquín Pereyra somehow slipped through Stuver’s grasp and into the net, credited as an own goal off a slight deflection. “One mistake from me, that leads to the first goal, which changes the whole dynamics of the game,” a visibly disappointed Stuver acknowledged post-match.
While Stuver recovered to make some impressive saves, he could do nothing to prevent Minnesota’s second goal in the 34th minute. Center back Oleksandr Svatok was outjumped by Anthony Markanich, who headed home a cross to double the Loons’ advantage. The final nail in the coffin came in stoppage time when a poor giveaway from Brendan Hines-Ike allowed Minnesota to pounce, with Pereyra eventually curling a shot in off the post.
Adding to Austin’s woes is their continued struggle in the attacking third. Despite getting their designated players into promising positions, the final execution consistently let them down. Substitutions of Myrto Uzuni and Osman Bukari before the hour mark for Diego Rubio and debutant Robert Taylor did little to spark the attack. Taylor came closest to scoring, while a late headed chance for Jáder Obrian sailed over the bar, leaving the home crowd frustrated and concerned about the direction of their team.
