Unranked Longhorns Fall to #4 Frogs in Thrilling Match

The unranked Texas Longhorns women’s soccer team gave the #4 ranked TCU Horned Frogs all they could handle on Tuesday night, ultimately falling 3-2 in a hard-fought match. Despite the loss, Longhorns Head Coach Ange Kelly praised her young squad’s effort against one of the nation’s top teams.

“I’m really proud of our squad. We have a young, young team and that’s the fourth-ranked team in the country,” Kelly said. “Our group is growing up every single match… This team is in a wonderful spot.”

The Longhorns came out firing, with Amalia Villarreal netting her team-leading third goal on a penalty kick just eight minutes into the game. But TCU responded quickly. Kamdyn Fuller equalized in the 20th minute, and Kaela Martinez gave the Frogs a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Texas dominated the second half, outshooting the Horned Frogs 13-7. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when defender Carly Montgomery, who had just entered the match, leveled the score at 2-2 with a left-footed shot through traffic.

The game remained tied until the 85th minute when TCU’s Morgan Brown headed home the game-winner, vaulting the Frogs to a 3-2 lead. The Longhorns fought to the end, with Audrey Bryant nearly finding an equalizer in the final minutes, but TCU’s defense held strong.

The Longhorns fall to 1-3-1 on the season, while the Horned Frogs remain undefeated at 4-0. Despite the loss, Texas showed they can compete with the country’s best, a promising sign for a team loaded with freshmen.
