Fodrey’s Late-Game Heroics Push Austin FC Past Seattle
September 21, 2025For the second time in five days, CJ Fodrey proved to be Austin FC’s savior, delivering a clutch assist in the final seconds of a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders at Q2 Stadium. The win, coming just days after a grueling U.S. Open Cup semifinal, all but guarantees Austin a spot in the postseason.
With the clock ticking down and the score tied 1-1 in second-half stoppage time, Austin FC needed a spark. Dani Pereira delivered a precise cross into the box, and Fodrey, showcasing his knack for late-game heroics, connected with a perfect header. The ball found its way to Myrto Uzuni, who didn’t hesitate, burying the game-winner and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The dramatic finish echoed Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup win against Minnesota, where Fodrey netted the decisive goal in the 120th minute. Austin FC coach Nico Estévez praised the young player’s impact. “He feels really good and that he can make an impact,” Estévez said. “And he’s doing it.” Goalkeeper Brad Stuver added, “CJ has found a groove. And you play the hot hand, right. The movement he’s having in the box is fantastic.”
The match started with Austin taking the lead late in the first half when Diego Rubio intercepted a pass and converted a one-on-one opportunity. However, the Sounders quickly responded, with Georgi Minoungou tying the match just 40 seconds into the second half after a series of sharp passes.
While Fodrey provided the late-game magic, it was Stuver’s steady performance that kept Austin FC in the fight. The veteran goalkeeper made two exceptional, point-blank saves, including a diving stop on Minoungou in the second half that Estévez called “one of his best of the year.” Stuver is now just six saves away from breaking the MLS record for most saves in a five-year span, currently held by U.S. soccer legend Tony Meola.
This win, against one of the top teams in the Western Conference and with the team’s legs still tired from Wednesday’s 120-minute marathon, marks arguably the best five-day stretch in club history. It was also the first time Austin FC has beaten Seattle at home, a significant milestone as the team looks toward the playoffs.
