Austin Tops Tulsa in US Open Cup Opener

The Austin Bold FC convincingly defeated the Tulsa Roughneck FC in their opening round match of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, 2-0.  

The U.S. Open Cup is the nation’s oldest annual team sports tournament and the oldest soccer cup competition. The Bold are one of 84 teams, from amateur to Major League Soccer, in this single elimination tournament. 

Sonny Guadarrama scored the winning goal for Austin in the 34thminute of play.  Andre Lima added to that tally with a score in the 74thminute. Defensive back Sean McFarlane assisted on both goals. 

The Bold controlled nearly every aspect of the match, out-shooting Tulsa 25-10 in total shots and 7-1 in shots-on-target.  Austin led time of possession 55% to 45%.  Tulsa committed 18 fouls to Austin’s 7.
