AVP Austin Open Advances to Elimination Round

Saturday saw the elimination round of the AVP Austin Open double elimination tournament.  Teams not winning today would wait until June 7th to play again in New York City.

The women’s top seeded team of April Ross and Alix Klineman defeat No. 13 ranked Sarah Day and Nicolette Martin in two sets, 21-17 and 21-17.  Day and Martin won entry to the tournament through the qualification round and their enthusiasm quickly made them the tourney favorites.

“I’m really proud. We came out and played them like any normal team. I think if you come onto the court and expect them to be phenomenal and you don’t play up to their level, you’re putting yourself on a different level,” Day told reporters. “We stayed really headstrong, we got the balls up. I thought our patience throughout the match was what kept up really steady and really helped us in our siding out.”

Ross and Klineman will play sixth seed Lane Carico and Karolina Marciniak in the semi-finals.  Carico is Klineman’s former partner.  Carico and Marciniak progressed through the Contender Bracket and defeated Jace Pardon and Brittany Tiegs 21-19 and 21-17.

Number 7 seed Lauren Fendrick and Sarah Sponcil defeated No. 14 seeded Janelle Allen and Kerri Schuh in a short 36 minute match.  Fendrick and Sponcil will meet No. 9 seed Karissa Cook and Katie Spieler in the semi-finals.
