Doug Bernier hits for the Cycle, but don’t forget his glove

Doug Bernier set a Round Rock Express record on Thursday by being the only player in the team’s 17 year history to hit for the cycle (1B2B, 3B, and HR).  With an interesting statistic like that, it’s important not to overlook his overall value to the team.  Bernier has probably gone under appreciated by the Express fans this season.  It’s hard to stand out when playing on a team with talented infielders like Jurickson Profar and Hanser Alberto.   However, when playing at either 2B or SS, Bernier has had twice the number of touches and nearly one-half the errors (3 errors in 354 chances) than Profar (5 errors in 189 chances) and Alberto (6 errors in 195 chances).

Don’t get me wrong; I love Profar and Alberto dearly.  But I must confess, I didn’t become a rider
of the Bernier fan wagon until just recently.  Bernier is like the Energizer Battery Rabbit.  He keeps going, and going, and going, and just doesn’t give up.  Surprisingly, he is in his 14th year in professional baseball and is senior member of the team at 36 years of age.  He’s currently batting .276 with a near perfect fielding percentage (2B and SS) of 0.991.  It’s time to give Doug another ticket to the Show, or trade him to a team that will.

Outside of the ballpark Bernier co-founded ProBaseballInsider.com (PBI) with his wife, Sarah.  PBI is a free on-line resource where pro players, coaches, trainers and scouts share their knowledge about how to play baseball the right way.  I encourage you to check it out.  Unlike Doug, my playing days are over, but the reviews are good!
