The American Tradition: Baseball and the 4th of July

Happy Birthday America, you are 240 years young today!  And your kid sister, baseball, was probably born just a few years laters (first known recorded reference was 1791).  It seems natural that the 4th of July and baseball go hand-in-hand.  American Independence represents our proudest moments, that frequently needs to be refought at great cost.  Baseball also brings proud moments, and at times seems like a prolonged hard fought battle.  You need look no further than great rivalries like the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees for an example.  But today is a day when we set aside those rivalries, either on the field or in the political arena, and remind ourselves that we are “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”  Happy Birthday America!
